About me

I’m Julian Calleja, a data engineer based in Malta, currently leading the data platform rebuild at Elantil. I build systems that help people work with data and make decisions from it.

My work

At Elantil, I’m working on a lakehouse rebuild using Kafka, Apache Iceberg, AWS Glue, Athena, and dbt. I’m interested in open formats and systems that can evolve as the team’s needs change.

Before that, I spent five years at Gaming Innovation Group, progressing from Data Engineer in Test to Senior Data Engineer. My work included a repeatable player-migration framework and Broker CRM, a shared pipeline for enriching and delivering player activity to multiple operator clients.

Between GiG and Elantil, I worked as a Data Architect at SpinCity Solutions. In under three months, I delivered analytical access to 6+ TB of historical data; complex historical queries completed in under 20 minutes.

What I explore outside work

I’ve experimented with iGaming affiliate projects, content, and competitive research. Those projects gave me practical experience of acquisition and positioning alongside the infrastructure work I do professionally.

I’m also interested in creativity and the physical things we make: a zine for a friend, a family home video, or a personal uniform. The Log brings together these experiments and the things I notice while working on them.

I lead the Rabat Scout Group in Malta. Outside that, I enjoy reading, hiking, and camping.

Working together

Most of my professional experience is in iGaming, across casino, sports betting, and lottery. My work includes real-time pipelines, migrations, and analytical platforms.
