While we were visiting a castle in Scotland, my mum looked out over the fortifications and started acting out what daily life might have been like there. I caught it on camera.
Before the trip, I’d bought a DJI Osmo Pocket 4 because I wanted to make a family video like the ones we grew up watching on VHS. I wanted to record little moments as they happened, including the ordinary bits between the places we’d planned to visit.
My mum’s reenactment was exactly the sort of thing I was glad to have recorded. There were highlights too, including a whisky tasting that was one of my favourite experiences of the trip. Having those clips together gave us a way to return to different parts of our time in Scotland.
Putting the video together was simple. I brought the clips into CapCut and stitched them together on a timeline, without much editing. Then I uploaded the result to YouTube as an unlisted video so we could keep a link to it and watch it again. Anyone with that link can view it; it’s a convenient way to share the finished video, rather than a private archive or a replacement for keeping the original files.
That was the idea behind buying the camera in the first place: making a home video. A collection of the places we went, the things we did, and the small moments that happened along the way.
I’m glad I recorded my mum acting out life at the castle. That’s a moment I want to be able to watch again.
